Social Equity and Integrated Water Resources Management
Social equity in water management is primarily about people, not water. Water may be allocated equitably, distributed equitably, and even accessed equitably, but if people are unable to derive benefits from it, the end result is not social equity. Thus it is not enough to consider only policies and processes within the water sector, but also the combined effect of these with other policies in other sectors and in national development policies.
This new GWP Technical Committee
Background Paper (#15) is by Humberto Peña, GWP Technical Committee member and
former National Director of Water Resources in
Integrated Urban Water Management
The twin engines of urbanisation and resource depletion will undermine efforts to achieve water security: water availability will be eroded and conflicts will escalate. The assumptions underlying conventional urban water management must be revisited.
This GWP Perspectives Paper outlines the effects of urbanization on water security and how the challenges of urban water resources management can be tackled. The Paper is by Dr Akiça Bahri, GWP Technical Committee member and Coordinator of the African Water Facility.
A GWP Perspective Paper provides the conceptual framework for a particular topic and the options for action. GWP welcomes a dialogue on the solutions proposed and contributions that will enhance future knowledge products on the topic.
