The UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education offers post-graduate courses and PhD research programmes in Delft, The Netherlands, and carries out research and capacity building projects all over the world. The mission of UNESCO-IHE is contribute to the education and training of professionals and to build the capacity of sector organisations, knowledge centres and other institutions active in the fields of water, the environment and infrastructure in developing countries and countries in transition.
UNESCO-IHE has a permanent staff of 160, of which 90 are scientific staff, while about 250 guest-lecturers from academia and industry contribute to the educational programme. Each year 750 participants (incl. about 200 new MSc students per year) from all over the world attend the various regular and short courses at UNESCO-IHE.
The overall thrust of the Department of Urban Water and Sanitation is urbanization as one of the dominant global processes. Although urbanisation offers enormous opportunities for socio-economic development, it also presents major challenges for the equitable and sustainable development of drinking water and sanitation infrastructure and services. Within this context the Department of Urban Water and Sanitation helps to build the necessary human resources and higher education and research capacities through postgraduate education, training, research and other capacity building activities in the fields of water supply and sanitation. The department intends to recruit a:
Lecturer in Water Treatment Technology (focus: desalination and membrane related technology) (m/f), 1,0 FTE
Responsibilities
• Lecturing in the MSc Programme in Municipal Water and Infrastructure.
•
Organization of modules within that programme.
• Lecturing in and
organization of short courses
• Active participation in research, including
the mentoring of MSc and PhD students.
• Developing new educational
materials, including innovative learning products
(i- learning).
•
Participation in acquisition and execution of research and capacity building
projects.
Requirements
• PhD in desalination and membrane technology is required; and at least two
years of professional experience in water supply engineering.
• Experience in
developing countries is a plus.
• Experience with and/or affinity for
research and capacity building (education and training) activities.
•
Affinity for experimental and field work, and mathematical modeling.
•
Proficiency in English is a prerequisite; working knowledge of one or more
‘large’ languages is a plus.
• Excellent communication and writing/reporting
skills.
• Ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams.
• Ability to
function in a multi-cultural environment.
• Readiness to travel and
participate in education, research and capacity building projects abroad.
Conditions
This position is, in principle, a permanent one, however, the
first contract is temporary, and only after this period a permanent contract can
be offered. The position is based in Delft, The Netherlands. A competitive
salary (scale 10/11 CAO Dutch Universities) is offered depending on
qualifications and experience in accordance with the conditions of employment
for Dutch Universities. The appointment implies entry into the Netherlands’
Civil Service Pension Fund (ABP). Candidates must be prepared to carry out long-
and short-term missions abroad.
