Benidorm consumes the same water as in 1975, despite its population quadrupled and the number of tourists multiplied by three, during the last 35 years.

According to a study by Spanish sociologist Mario Gaviria, National Environment Award 2005, about 15.000 residents in 1975 consumed ten hectometres of water per year whereas now, with 71 034 residents taxed, are eleven.

According to the study, this has been possible thanks to the significant decrease in the average water consumption per person per day as compared with 1107 liters of 1975 placed the current 383 liters.

The report argues that the tourist capital of the Costa Blanca has "a more efficient supply system, better and most sustainable of the world."

Moreover, sustainability of the municipality is shown in the "generation of solid waste" and in 1999, with 55.000 registered inhabitants, is generated per year more than 62.000 tonnes of waste while in 2009, with a population of over 70.000 inhabitants, there were just over 60.000.

Gaviria's study indicated that tourists from Benidorm generate "less solid waste" than the Spanish average provincial capital, less water consumption and less expenditure of energy.
