News CYPRUS - Deal signed for new bicommunal sewerage plant

The mayors of the Greek-held and Turkish-held sections of Nicosia, on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus, agreed to build a new sewage treatment plant in the northern part of the city to replace the current outdated facility, which is polluting the Pediaeos River and local groundwater. The 47-million-euro project is scheduled to be completed in 2009 and will treat wastewater so that it can be recycled for irrigation, besides producing more than twice as much water per day. The project will be funded equally by the Greeks and the Turks.
