AFED Conference 2012 "Ecological Footprint and Survival Options in Arab Countries"
The Arab Forum for Environment and Development (AFED) will release its 2012 annual report on “Ecological Footprint and Survival Options in Arab Countries” during its annual conference which will be held on 29-30 November 2012 at Phoenicia hotel, Beirut.
AFED report will analyze survival options in Arab countries based on a comprehensive survey of available renewable resources (biocapacity) and consumption (footprint) carried out for the first time. As basis for the analysis, AFED has commissioned the Global Footprint Network (GFN), a world leader in this field, to produce an Ecological Footprint Atlas exploring resource constraint in the Arab countries. The study aims to provide an ecological bank statement for the Arab region. It is hoped that the 2012 AFED report will help promote the concept of ecological accounts and move towards their integration in decision making.
Some world renowned figures have confirmed their participation as guest speakers in the Conference, among them are: Ashok Khosla, President, Club of Rome, Mathis Wackernagel, President, Global Footprint Network (GFN), and Julia Matron-Lefevre, Director General, International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). According to early confirmations, it is expected to have over 12 leaders participating in the lively debates, which gives added significance particularly that the conference convenes at a turning point in the Arab region.
