The Ninth International Training Workshop on ICM in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea
MEDCOAST Institute is a unique, well-established, high quality and longest running (since 1994) international training program on integrated coastal management. The curriculum is specially designed toaddress issues and problems which are particular to or significant for the Mediterranean and the Black Sea countries. The program is carried out with a high level of interaction between the participants and thefaculty members.
Similar to past programs, MEDCOAST Institute 2012 consists of three parts:
1) Four days long in-class training, including lectures by the international faculty on various topics related to ICM in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, presentations by participants on their country experiences, and group exercises, to be held in a pleasant hotel in Dalyan (25 - 28 September).
Emphasised topics are:
*ICM issues and problems in the Mediterranean and the BlackSea.
*Sustainable development and theoretical framework for ICM.
*Physical and ecological description of coastal systems.
*Coastal and marine resources, uses, coastal developmentactivities.
*Coastal and marine spatial planning.
*Coastal tourism.*Beach management.
*Coastal erosion and the use of coastal engineeringtechnology.
*Coastal water quality & litter.
*Coastal and marine risks.
*Coastal management techniques and tools.
*Specially protected coastal and marine areas.
*Coastal management implications of climate change.
*Remote sensing and GIS.*Institutional and legal arrangements.
*EU policy and legislation for coastal and marinemanagement.
*ICZM Protocol of the Barcelona Convention.
*Review of the regional efforts for ICM in the Mediterranean.
*Review of the regional efforts for ICM in the Black Sea.
2) A week long, hands-on study trip and field observations ontraditional wooden boats sailing along the Aegean coast fromMarmaris to Fethiye (Olu Deniz) and anchoring at locations ofsignificant coastal conservation and/or development activitiesfor observations, applied research and interviews with variousactors and stakeholders of coastal management.
A number oflectures will also be delivered on the boat during evenings (29September – 6 October).
3) Workshop with hands-on training, including lectures by thefaculty on topics relevant to the field trip, presentations by theparticipants on their field work, group discussion sessions andexercises in the pleasant hotel in Dalyan (7 - 11 October).
