We are currently facing a serious drought in the south and east of England,
however recent work suggests that this situation is likely to become the norm.
The aim of this event will be to explore the pressures on water resources over
the next 40 years, and will examine the issues faced and the actions required by
those who plan, manage, regulate and legislate. Themes and
topics:
- What's new? Findings from recent work on future pressures (WWP, C4C,
Scenario work, European WEI); assessment of the needs of individual sectors
(Public Water Supply, Agriculture, Industry, Energy) under climate change,
demographic change and economic dynamics; how needs mesh.
- Licensing abstraction and managing the supply-demand balance to meet the
needs of people, the environment and all sectors of the economy; the need for
and the required shape of licence reform; evolution of the current model of
water resources planning and management.
- Environmental stewardship - what forms of adaptations to climate change and
demographic change are feasible, effective and acceptable? What tradeoffs will
we have to make to balance competing pressures (e.g. WFD versus economic pinch)?
