International Roundtable on Protection and Sustainable Use of Transboundary Waters in Southeastern Europe
An International Roundtable on Protection and Sustainable Use of
Transboundary Waters in Southeastern Europe will be organized and supported
by the German Ministry of Environment in cooperation with the Croatian
Ministry of Regional Development Forestry and Water Management, GEF IWLEARN,
World Bank and Global Water Partnership – Mediterranean, in Zagreb, 15-16
December 2011.

This
Roundtable marks six years of action under the Petersberg Phase II / Athens
Declaration Process for the enhancement of Transboundary Management in
Southeastern Europe (SEE); the mandate was given by the authorities and
stakeholders of the SEE countries during a Roundtable organized in Berlin,
Germany in 2005.
The International Roundtable aims to:
-
Contribute towards the continuation and deepening of the Regional Dialogue in
SEE under the Petersberg Phase II / Athens Declaration Process acting in synergy
with the GEF IWLEARN and UNECE Water Convention.
- Facilitate the
enhancement of cooperative and integrated management of shared water bodies in
SEE.
- Contribute to the process towards World Water Forum (Marseille,
March 2012) and Rio+20.
The International Roundtable will:
- Discuss
the developments in SEE in the field of TWRM since the initiation of the
Regional Dialogue during the International Roundtable “Protection and
Sustainable Use of Transboundary Waters in South-Eastern Europe”, 5-7 December
2005 Berlin, Germany.
- Identify areas of intervention for the Process to
facilitate the enhancement of cooperation on TWRM.
- Recognize the TWRM
related priority issues to be addressed through a Regional Dialogue on TWRM in
the SEE.
High level staff of competent water authorities of the SEE
countries as well as key regional stakeholders – in particular from water using
sectors - and international stakeholders will be invited to participate. These
include targeted representatives of GEF projects, joint bodies of shared basins,
regional associations and networks of civil society organisations, actors
supporting the political processes and regional initiatives, water user
associations and private sector, academia, donor countries and international
institutions and organizations etc.
