Event Energy, water & climate change in the Mediterranean & Middle East

The Cyprus Institute is organizing an international conference on "Energy, Water and Climate Change in the Mediterranean and Middle East" (EWACC2010) in the week of 11-15 January. On the occasion of this conference, on the 11th January, a public lecture under the title "Can we ‘fix' the climate problem?" will be given by Prof. Jos Lelieveld, one of the most cited scientists in the fields of climate change and atmospheric chemistry. Professor Lelieveld is the Director of the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Mainz (Germany) and Professor at the Energy, Environment and Water Research Center of The Cyprus Institute.

In response to the Copenhagen Climate Accord, the conference brings to Cyprus distinguished scientists, policy makers and high-level officials from the US, Europe and the Middle East to discuss the present and the emerging challenges posed by climate change in the Mediterranean and the Middle East. The conference aims to contribute to a strong and unified position in the international negotiations and a collaborative approach towards solutions for this area, which will be particularly affected by increasingly intense hot and dry weather.

Prior to Jos Lelieveld's opening lecture, welcome addresses will be delivered by Dr. Titos Christofides, Under Secretary to the President of the Republic, Dr. Michalis Polinikis, Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and the Environment, and Prof. Costas N. Papanicolas, President of The Cyprus Institute.

The public lecture will be held on Monday 11th January (18:00) at the Hilton Cyprus Hotel. To register for the lecture or the international conference please contact Eroulla Cadd at The Cyprus Institute on tel. +357 22 208600 or email ewacc2010@cyi.ac.cy.
