The Eco-Mediterranean Conference: Towards a sustainable management of Mediterranean Sea
The CONFERENCE ECOMEDITERRÁNEA: TOWARDS A SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT OF MEDITERRANEAN SEA, organized by Conselleria of Environment of the Illes Balears, will be a great media act of international repercussion and politics, scientific and social reference that seeks the search and the position of solutions to the different pressures to which is subjected the Mediterranean Sea.
In order to do this the Conference will approach the key topic to achieve the sustainable of Mediterranean: the management of the sea and the coastal areas, the water, the residuals, the tourism and the urban development, the energy, the climatic change, gobernance, among other.
The Mediterranean environment is one of the richest and at the same time one of the most vulnerable in the world as its marine and coastal environments are exposed to a combination of pressures, 80% of which come from land-based pollution.
More than half of urban areas on the Mediterranean with a population over 100,000 inhabitants do not have waste treatment plants and 60% of the wastewater produced in these areas is directly discharged into the sea.
The marine environment of the Mediterranean is specially exposed to agricultural waste, air bone particles and river run-off, which carries pathogens, heavy metals, organics pollutants, oils and radioactive substances, sometimes coming from non Mediterranean countries.
The rapid urbanization and non sustainable developing of the tourism create a number of negative environmental and public health outcomes in the Mediterranean coast. The industrial pollution, the sea transport, domestic activities, the lost of open areas and the destruction of coastal ecosystems for building projects are also taking their toll.
The Ecomediterranean Conference: Towards Sustainable Management of the Mediterranean will have as the main goal to report to the social agents and, in general to the society, on the importance to seek effectives solutions to protect the Mediterranean Sea and its natural resources.
Through the participation of figures of marked prestige belonging to organizations of countries and regions of both banks of Mediterranean, this Conference will approach the different pressures to those that it is subjected the Sea Mediterranean, the environmental impacts that these provoke, as well as the coordination politicians, strategies and performances directed to achieve, among all, a healthier and less more polluted Mediterranean, in definitive, cleaner and more sustainable..
