World Water Week in Stockholm - Monitoring Drinking Water Supply and Sanitation: moving beyond 2015, preparing the next generation of indicators
Monitoring drinking water supply and sanitation is essential for good planning and optimal development of the sector and to evaluate progress towards achieving the MDG and national targets. Monitoring practices and reporting mechanisms have considerably evolved over the past years and new ways to improve monitoring are now being identified.
Whether applied
at global or country levels, current definitions, indicators and
reporting systems in use reflect a partial picture. The monitoring
domain has now reached a stage where more detailed data and analysis
are needed. As we approach 2015, it is important to re-examine all
facets of monitoring systems now in use.
This seminar has a dual
purpose. It will focus on global, regional and national monitoring
systems to identify areas where improvements can be made prior to 2015
on the basis of existing definitions, indicators and reporting systems.
It will also consider options for a new generation of indicators
capable of more sensitive monitoring beyond 2015 at all levels.
