Intensive courses on Desalination Engineering: Fouling and Scaling in Reverse Osmosis, Nanofiltration, Ultra- and Microfiltration: Theory and Practice
The course offers theory and practice on membrane technology applied in
drinking and industrial water production. Despite advancements in membrane
manufacturing and technology fouling and scaling remain major problems. As a
consequence the main focus of the course will be on these items. To bridge
the gap between theory and practice, the course will integrate both aspects.
The process of lecturing is aiming to be highly interactive, to support
participants in internalizing the subject matter. Topics to be discussed in
depth are:
- Principles of micro- and ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis and nanofiltration. energy consumption;
- Overview of micro-and ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis and nanofiltration, elements and systems;
- Fouling and cleaning in micro- and ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis and nanofiltration systems;
- Process design of reverse osmosis systems;
- Particulate, inorganic fouling, biofouling, organic fouling and scaling in reverse osmosis systems and pre-treatment;
- Computer aided scaling calculations;
- Recent advances in reverse osmosis technology.
