News Official launch of MED-3R, strategic project focusing on sustainable waste management and recycling

ReduceReuse and Recycle waste: this is the motto of MED-3R strategic project, which will officially start in Nice (France) on 13th June in the presence of various personalities including Mr. Christian Estrosi, Mayor of Nice and Chairman of the Metropolis of Nice Côte d’Azur, Mr. Mabrouk Ksantini, Mayor of Sfax (Tunisia), Mr. Jules-Louis DAHER, Deputy Mayor of Blat and Mr. Eric Ciotti, member of the French Parliament. The Joint Managing Authority will also be part of the event and provide information on both Programme results in terms of main thematic clusters and projects dealing with the waste issue.

In response to the threats posed by the increase in waste production to the environment and public health, MED-3R ("Euro-Mediterranean strategic platform for a suitable waste management") aims to reinforce the management capacities of local authorities from France, Italy, Jordan, Lebanon and Tunisia with regards to waste collection, disposal and valorization. The implementation phase, to last until the end of 2015, foresees different actions in order to enhance the institutional governance of public policies related to waste management such as:

• the definition or improvement of 13 waste management plans in different cities of the Mediterranean area;
• the implementation of 13 pilot projects addressing various types of waste including plastic, organic or hazardous material;
• training of at least 300 public officials and managers, technical agents and staff of ONGs.

Thanks to the project waste production should be reduced by 5% to 10% in the target areas and waste valorization increased by 25%

MED-3R is coordinated by the Metropolis of Nice Côte d’Azur and gathers 14 partners from France, Italy, Jordan, Lebanon and Tunisia. Its total budget is € 4.787.062, of which € 4.308.385 as Programme contribution (90%).

On the other hand, the Euromed network, which aims to develop exchanges and partnerships between north and south shores of the Mediterranean, moved officially during this meeting its headquarters to Nice. Christian Estrosi, president of the Euromed network since 2008, has announced the installation of the permanent headquarters in Nice of this network.

This facility meets the wishes of Deputy Mayor of Nice and President of Nice Côte d'Azur Metropolis to promote "cooperation with the countries and cities of the Mediterranean to reinforce the development of democracy in the territories" with the objectives of "promote dialogue and development projects, including sustainable development, supporting partnerships and exchange of know-how in the Mediterranean area through concrete policies of decentralized cooperation, while enhancing a knowledge commons."
