Projects
Focus on Integrated Water Resources Management
EU-INCO adopted the principles of Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) in the late 1990s, and one of the programme's requirements has been to sponsor the use of water researchers and to promote these principles. Between 1998 and 2002 (FP5), the EU-INCO-MED funded 32 water-related projects for €32.5 million, involving more than 170 teams in the 10 Mediterranean Partner Countries and around 150 in the EU member states. The major topics tackled were: ecosystem management, water use in agriculture, water treatment, water management, water policy, water technologies, desertification, and management of scarce water resources. For more information, see the presentation of the overview of EU funded water research projects in the Mediterranean given by the EC in June 2003.
In the framework of the research component of
the EU Water Initiative (EUWI), the EC DG Research as set up a website to facilitate access to the International Water
Research project funded by the EC, which includes:
• a database of international project research with possible
access by country or river basin
• a review of 67 international research projects on
Integrated Water Resource Management funded by the EC over the last 10 years
(1994-2004) involving an EU contribution of more than €50
million.
