Objectives | - The project develops new technologies for the agricultural re-use of
polluted Olive Mill Wastewaters (OMW). These constitute a big environmental
problem for all Mediterranean Countries, in terms of pollution and of water
consumption. The latter can be particularly relevant, due to the milling
techniques adopted by the South-Bank olive-oil producers. - New, low cost technologies are developed forminimising the phenolic content of OMW via widely available natural catalysts (olive husk, soil components, white rot fungi). The validation of the results will be afforded by fertirrigation tests. New technologies are developed for the extraction of high added-value compounds from OMW, of potential interest as antioxidant food-additives. - All the relevant biological and analytical protocols for the evaluation of the antioxidant activity will be implemented, as well. All technologies will be developed up to pilot scale. |
