This regional project aims to set an integrated management system for olive oil wastes in Lebanon, Syria and Jordan, in order to reduce their negative environ-mental impact without harming the production and growth of the olive oil sector.

Objectives
  • Introduce cleaner production options, prevention, control and treatment measures to the olive oil industry
  • Raise awareness of the value of environmental-friendly olive oil processing
  • Set standards and limits relevant to the olive oil sector
Results Achievements / Current Status:

    * A database of olive oil production and a GIS map of the locations of mills, ground water and “hot spots” in Syria has been finalized
    * Meetings of the regional and national project committees and four training workshops for staff of all stakeholders have been held
    * Analysis of Syrian environmental legislation, with the aim of identifying modifications needed, has been completed
    * Audits of eight mills and four sites of complementary industries have been conducted
    * Reports on the first and fourth phase of the project have been completed
